An Amazing Trinidad Villa
...ideal North Coast get-away and weekend Camelot
High on the cliff, hidden from view, sits a spectacular Trinidad villa. This Blanchisseuse beach house was an creatively designed cluster of buildings, and the center of focus for this multi bedroomed, hotel-like complex, was an infinity-edged swimming pool with spectacular views of Trinidad's wild North Coast.
Whispered Memories
We'd only been invited to spend the day, but we were lucky enough to be shown around this amazing Trinidad villa, each room introduced to us like an old friend.
What really caught my attention was the great room, a high-raftered cavern of a room that looked out on the pool. There was an almost tactile presence there, memories of great evenings, and nights of board games and family laughter, still present, adding to the personality of the space.
Rum & Coca-Cola Day
This was a rum and coca-cola day - a lazy, leave your cares on the beach and chat with friend kind-of day.
What a day, limin' on Blanchisseuse Beach when the tide was low, and playing in the pool when the tide was so high we couldn't get to the beach. Blanchisseuse means, "washer woman", and on this dark, rocky and sometimes stormy coastline, this sandy cove must have been a glistening haven to early French Creole settlers.
Crashing Waves
This was a stunning Trinidad villa, one of the most dramatic Caribbean rentals we've visited, the holiday residence of a true artist. A fact made apparent by the setting as much as by this gem of a vacation home.
It was obvious that considerable thought had been put into maximizing each angle and view. I could have spent many a sunset evening sitting on the small deck perched just above the crashing waves.
Caribbean Camelot
Similarly, I could have spent days in the romantic gazebo, atop it's own miniature isle, a single tooth standing just off Trinidad's ragged North Coast, it's feet washed in the blue Caribbean Sea.
Accessed only by a narrow bridge, this getaway provided a panoramic view, an ideal location to witness the changing moods of this aquamarine sea as it sometimes assaults, sometimes caressed Trinidad's North Coast. If we had been staying longer this would have been my weekend Camelot, high on it's hill, complete with it's own drawbridge.
Tourist Island
Trinidad is not a tourist island, in the sense that everything revolves around some preconceived fantasy of what a Caribbean vacation should be - usually a plastic view in many ways.
No, the Trinidad we know and love is a complex society, living life on its own terms. Not necessarily perfect but incredibly authentic, a people and a place still finding it's way in a changing world... but doing so on it's own terms.
A World Apart
This Trinidad villa was truly in a class of it's own, or so we reflected, as we wound our way back to Port-of-Spain, journeying through one small community after another.
Blanchisseuse is about an hour's drive beyond Maracas Beach, a long journey by Trinidad standards, where any destination further than 30-minutes away is considered to be "in de bush" or more picturesquely "behind God back".
