Sweet, Sweet, Trinidad and Tobago

by Nicky
(Vancouver)

I've never experienced Carnival in Rio but I've played mas in Trinidad and Tobago over 13 times, and I can say it's the best time of my life!

There's no other way to describe carnival but to say that once you play you will always want to go back. It's two days when you let all your worries go and just break free on the roads of Port-of-Spain. It doesn't matter about your age, race or size, just get there, get a costume and experience this great feeling. Everyone is happy, and the costumes are so beautiful.

The music (calypso/soca) is amazing you can't help but move your feet when you hear it!

I will be missing carnival this year, for the first time in 10 years, so it's going to be very hard come Carnival Monday and Tuesday, but then I guess that there is always next year!

Friends and Freedom at Trinidad Carnival
by: Lina

I agree Nicky, after playing mas for the first time 6 years ago, the pull to go back to Trinidad and Tobago at Carnival time is astonishing. Like you, I love the costumes and the incredible feeling of freedom, it's a giant party that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

Through the years we've met and made friends with folks from all over the world wile playing mas in Port-of-Spain, including people from New Jersey, Australia, London and of course people from Trinidad and Tobago, and other Caribbean Islands.
