Idyllic Store Bay

...convenient sun, sea and shining sands

Beach slippers for reader to wearOnly a short walk from Crown Point Airport, Store Bay is an all time popular favorite with visitors and locals alike. Enclosed by natural coral walls, this cove trumpets its acclaim with surrounding Tobago hotels, Tobago villas, and a wide assortment of other Caribbean rentals.

Crown Reef, Store Bay, Tobago Early Morning Splendor

Store Bay, whose name is an Anglicization of its first Dutch settler, Stoer, is wonderfully close to Tobago's Crown Point Airport. When you fly over from Trinidad for the day, there's just a short 5-minute walk to the beach.

We like to visit this spectacular little beach early in the morning, when it sits vacant, calling out to potential worshipers, bright sand and aqua water waiting, its potential charms wasted, full of promise, inviting.

Early morning at Store Bay Tobago Natural Sea-Salt Spa

At this time, the beach is cool, the calm, clear water coaxing you in with the ripple of delicate little wavelets; and the sea is like a healing spa, easing away life's cares, and replacing them with clear-blue possibilities that set the mind free, to dream of better days.

As the day unfolds, Store Bay becomes a hive of activity. There's great swimming, sunbathing and sandcastle building for all who visit. There are restaurants, beach bars, craft shops and services of every type nearby, including free parking and washrooms. Due to the number of Tobago water tours and other activities that make this cove their home, it's hard to get bored on this idyllic Caribbean beach.

Glass-bottom-boat adventure going to Buccoo Reef, Store Bay Tobago So Many Memories

We began our romantic beach vacation here, and we set off on our glass bottom boat adventures to Buccoo Reef here at waters edge.

We've stood on this beach to watch the winners of the Great Carib Race - Trinidad to Tobago's powerboating spectacle - cross the finish line, and we've sat here to witness Angostura's Tobago Sail Week events.

We've sat on these coral sands on quiet evenings, and reminisced about the days of pirates and sail, when great galleons must have used this quiet anchorage in their repeated conquests of Tobago.

 Popularity Has its Price

On weekends, this beach can get crowded; that's when we take the opportunity to explore further a field, perchance to capture some exciting Tobago beach photos.

We also prefer to avoid Store Bay when there's a Cruise Ship in town; that's when we seek out the beaches of Englishman's Bay, Pirate's Bay near Charlotteville, Speyside, Castara and Bateaux Bays, to name just a few. Or, we hang out on the chocolate sands of Pinfold Bay on the approach to Granby Point, if we are looking for the exotic.

Handmade souvenir shops at Store Bay Tobago Tobago Handicraft

Store Bay is home to a handful of great little souvenir boutiques. Ras Ringo, the proprietor of our favorite handicraft booth, is a charming man who graciously invited us to his home on one occasion, so we could experience some real Tobago hospitality. He's the one who made our coconut head logo.

Store Bay Beach at Crown Point TobagoMy husband must visit this beach every time we're in Tobago, both for a dip in it's quite waters and for his Curry Crab and Dumplings - a delicious local specialty - conveniently available from small take out restaurants. You'll want to explore Trinidad and Tobago food during your visit - it's a taste bud fiesta.

Snorkeling at Store Bay Tobago Snorkeling Delight

Store Bay is ideal for snorkelers who'd like to broaden their snorkeling experience.

The natural coral cliffs that encircle the beach stretch out into the water, like welcoming arms, make a perfect habitat for many marine species. and the relative safety of the clam, aqua waters of Crown Point make it a great snorkeling venue for the intermediate adventurer.

After a day at activity packed Store Bay, we sleep well. Total oblivion. I believe that this little cove is the ancestral home of the sand man - he of childhood fame. We'll return, of that you can be sure.
