A great introductory tour: Your adventure begins in Arima, one of the oldest towns in Trinidad, as we make our way to the Asa Wright Nature Center, a world famous reserve, where you can see over 140 species of wild tropical birds. After a memorable Creole lunch, we'll journey across the picturesque Northern Range, through steamy rain forest valleys and old cocoa estates. Then, weather permitting; you'll take a short walk to the captivating Avocat Waterfall for a cool swim. On resuming our journey, you'll have the opportunity to explore the coastal fishing village of Blanchisseuse and it's many near by beaches, as well as Trinidad's scenic North Coast. The final stop on our adventure is Las Cuevas Bay, where you can explore the beach, go for an evening swim in the Caribbean Sea, or take a few pictures of this Trinidad beach at sunset.
Drive over the beautiful Northern Range Mountains to Blanchisseuse fishing village; then enjoy a memorable hike across the Marianne River as you journey towards the spectacular, expanse of Paria Bay and Beach. We will journey through the forested slopes and small bays of Trinidad's North Coast – rugged foothills crisscrossed with sparkling streams fringed with Philodendrons, where you will hear the distinctive call of the Bellbird, and see numerous butterflies and tropical birds. Swim in either in the Caribbean Sea or in the pool below Paria's waterfall, a 25-minute hike beyond the shore. Return the same day, so excited about your excursion that you book other eco tours for your Trinidad holiday.
For our Northern Range guided eco tours we drive across the North Coast Mountains to the forested foothills of El Tucuche, the islands' second highest peak, to then enjoy an exhilarating hike through mid-course terrain, spectacular rain forest vegetation, and giant trees. A gallery of exotic tropical birds, forest mammals and river creatures flit in and out of view as we make our way to the pool of the 250-foot Rincon or Habio Waterfall for a cool swim. Then we'll spend a few moments with members of an isolated forest fringe community before returning to Port-of-Spain via Maracas and other North Coast beaches.
A memorable, 24-caret, eco tours expedition into the famous Nariva Swamp and Bush Bush Wildlife Sanctuary, by kayak or dinghy in the Wet Season, on foot in the Dry. Nariva features 6,254 hectares (24 sq. miles) of wetlands, marshes, and swamp and palm forests that teem with over 200 species of birds, including Red-bellied Macaws and Amazon Parrots, which interrupt the silence of this peaceful lily covered expanses. Joining them you'll see Howler and Capuchin monkeys, Cayman, Anteaters and tree climbing Porcupines, the endangered Ocelot, and the peaceful Manatee or Sea Cow. To cap off these Eco Tours we meet the self-sufficient villagers of Kernahan on the swamp fringe and witness their tolerant lifestyle.
El Tucuche, the second highest peak of the Northern Range at 3,071 feet, is fabled in Carib and Arawak lore as a sacred mountain, and home to the endemic Golden Tree Frog. We approach through St Joseph, the old Capital of Trinidad in Spanish Colonial times, and Maracas Valley where we’ll begin our steep ascent to the peak. As you climb, on these Eco Tours, giant tree ferns and Bromeliads give way to upland ecosystems of mist shrouded elfin woodland, where moss covers the trees, and ferns carpet the ground. During your strenuous accent to El Tucuche's plateau you will also see a variety of monkeys, lizards, frogs, small mammals, and spectacular tropical bird, wildlife that is absoluly fearless due to the absence of man. On our decent we will visit the Carib Rock, the only known Amerindian Glyphs in Trinidad.
Central Trinidad guided tours afford the opportunity to see Trinidad's East Indian culture, it's almost like visiting India for the day. You'll see astonishing Hindu shrines, temples, mosques, colorful bazaars and a variety of craft workshops. Then we'll stop for a traditional East Indian lunch before visiting the Lion House, the once home of Vidia Naipaul - Trinidad's most famous, contemporary English-language novelist. We end the day on the water, boating into the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, to see flocks of Scarlet Ibis as they make their evening flight from Venezuela to roost in the mangroves at sunset.
The Dragons Mouth between South America and Trinidad is broken by a series of beautiful islands, dear to Trinidadians as sites for holiday homes. Islands that have in the past played host to pirates, maritime battles, a flourishing whaling industry, and American wartime military bases, now host one of Trinidad's last remaining French patois speaking communities. You'll set off down-de-islands from the Chagaramas National Park, where marinas burst with yachts from all over the world. We stop at Gaspar Grande to visit its limestone caves, then explore Scotland Bay, the Bocas, and Monos Island (named for the bands of Howler monkeys it once had) on our way to the island of Chacachacare, just a few miles off South America. Here we make our final stop on the black volcanic sands of La Tinta Bay to picnic, swim or do a little hiking before returning to the mainland.
