Sea Glass
A beach activity with a growing number of fans is collecting sea glass, and Rockly Beach in Tobago is one of the top beaches in the world for collecting. But what is sea glass?
Known also as "mermaid's tears," "beach glass," "ocean gems," sea glass begins as shards of broken glass discarded on the beach or near the shore. These glass pieces are tumbled by wave action along the shore line during the course of many years.
The result is a unique glass "gem" that no longer looks like the original piece.
Due to the tumbling of the glass among the rocks and sands of the beach, the glass becomes rounded and "etched" by the elements. It achieves a frosted and glowing look that is extremely attractive and can be used for jewelry and other crafts.
Some colors, such as white, brown, and bottle green are common. What colors are the rarest? Where can you find sea glass?
While you are planning your Trinidad and Tobago vacation, look up the sea glass beaches listed for these islands, and find out more about this fascinating subject at Odyssey Sea Glass.
Yes, as a beach activity that can be fun for all ages, it's hard to beat the "treasure hunt" for sea glass gems. But be careful...it's addictive!
